Swedish Delight: "Evil"
Posted by mr grits on April 4, 2009 at 21:45:30:
The story of a 16 year old boy who is expelled from public school and is sent, by a caring mother, to an expensive male boarding school to curb his violent tendencies. Erik, who is savagely beaten by his stepfather, cannot cope in public school and soon finds himself in a private school not unlike the one portrayed in "It" (McDowell as the rebellious youth).
Erik's new roommate is one of the school's eggheads/wusses whom he befriends. Soon after arriving the upper class hazing begins and runs the full gamut until Erik finally strikes out. But, knowing his violence from the beginning, his outbursts are more tame and civilized than before.
"Evil" is based on the experiences of a Swedish journalist who turned his memories into a best-selling novel and while it seems to be a bit of a "coming of age" theme it is actually a more serious drama.
For more worthwhile Scandinavian viewing try: "The Inheritance", "Opium", and "Adam's Apples".
