"Open Hearts:" Susanne Bier's exploration of the aftermath of a tragedy:

a young man is severely injured days before his wedding. That event in turn wreaks havoc in the life of a doctor who becomes involved when he intervenes to calm the despondent fiancée.
This is a film which easily could have degenerated into a weepy melodrama if not for the powerful performances, especially that of Mads Mikkelsen, the injured younger man, and the shell-shocked bride-to-be. The writing also side-steps the usual melodramatic pitfalls, never sentimentalizing or painting any of the characters with either a sugar or acid-soaked brush. As the traumas get unintentionally passed from one character to another, the film seemingly asks us to examine what part fate plays in our lives, how tenuous our existences are, and what is the nature of love--- is anything so fragile "real?"
