RE: JI how much do you think Blue Ray will improve the look of that film?

I just rewatched the Godfather on BD, which was in theaters around the same time as Chinatown. Both are rather noirish, dark films and the home video versions I owned on VHS and DVD were not detailed or fun to watch from a cinematography standpoint because of the awful picture quality. The Coppola-restored BD was a total revelation. From the start of the film, which takes place in the study as people ask Brando for favors, details leap out at you. For example, the cat he is holding at the beginning was hardly recognizable as a cat in previous versions. On the BD, it's instantly recognizable and lifelike. Fabrics, facial expressions and skin texture is rendered more realistically. I'm not talking about a small improvement. It's significant. The audio has better definition too. Other BDs aren't as dramatic an improvement, but even the badly transferred ones are better than DVD with one or two exceptions. There is every reason to believe Chinatown in 1080p with lossless audio could be another revelation.
