excellent film which echoes the great novel of Stendhal, "The Red and the Black," though with clever omissions and distortions.
A famous sixty-ish author and a young, filthy rich and neurotic heir both fall in love with the bourgeois tv personality played by Ludivine Sagnier--- with tragic results. Benoit Magimel gives a fantastic performance as the foppish and weak younger man, quite overshadowing the callow novelist played by Francois Berleand.
Like most Chabrol films (the better ones), nothing much seems to be happening for awhile--- one has a feeling which must be similar to that of an insect as it is caught in a web--- and then the strands start to tremble and we make out the outlines of the 8-legged creature coming at us, unstoppably.
For those that have seen, "Eyes Wide Open," this film will show you how a true master of the form executes a not dissimilar tale.
