"H6: Diary of a Serial Killer": Redux
Posted by mr grits on December 29, 2010 at 19:15:47:
This is NOT a film I pull out of the closet every year. The first time I watched it I became uncomfortable and uneasy with all the pleading and begging but just like a good prison camp guard I became acclimated to the action with subsequent viewings.
H6 is the story of a man, insanely jealous with explosive anger, who kills his woman after conjuring in his mind she was cheating on him. (She wasn't). He is sent to prison for 15 years and then released. While incarcerated he earns a law degree and his aunt dies and bequeaths him a rickety apartment building. He also studies great serial killers and begins correspondence with a nurse who falls in love with him.
After release he takes possession of the apartment building, marries the nurse (who works nights), and readies H6 as his pleasure chamber of horrors.
Fernando Acaso, who resembles an amiable Brad Garret, plays Antonio Frau who invites locals and prostitutes into his lair with a chilling and relaxed grace. He is smooth, soothing, and seductive with his airs and charm and he takes no prisoners--they usually surrender.
Once his victims make it to H6 Mr.Frau's fun begins. One critic said this was "Spain's answer to Hostel". I disagree. This has depth and Acaso's Frau is someone you've known before.
