second view and it vastly improved for me: Benoit Magimel's Mama's boy, the femme fatale of Smet, and the clever "boiling a frog" direction. Indeed, in watching the struggles of the charming and responsible young man to manage his job and his love life, we have bourgeois life, encapsulated. But Chabrol isn't just trying to go after low-hanging political fruit: it is the power of love, of living a life on the edge, that fascinates him.
Splendid performances all around. And the bonus that your intelligence won't be insulted by exaggerated surprises or ridiculous plot twists.
Chabrol, indeed, may be the most underrated of the French New Wave artists.
