Some recommendations...

...as far as TV shows goes is the BBC series MI-5 (called Spooks in the UK) if you like espionage thrillers. Eight seasons are available on DVD. As the series progresses the cast changes with new characters being introduced. With good writing, direction and acting the shows are generally excellent and a personal favorite. Start from the beginning. Generally speaking each season gets progressively better in my opinion.

Another BBC six episode series I recommend is State Of Play. I found it to be much better than the Hollywood re-make with Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck.

Second Sight, a BBC detective series with Clive Owen is also good.

Last but not least is the BBC Wallander series based on Henning Mankell's novels with Kenneth Branagh playing a dour Swedish detective. Two seasons available on DVD that I liked a lot.

The Brits do some nice work in the detective/crime/thriller genres. One I've been meaning to see but haven't got round to is the Red Riding Trilogy.
