I agree with you on your "slightly overacted" comment, this didn't quite have the cinema verite quality Leigh has managed to get in his other films, more like watching a (very good!) play than feeling as a viewer you are almost intruding on other peoples lives, and not being aware that the characters are acting at all

I'd recommend "Happy Go Lucky" with the wonderful Sally Hawkins, Leighs 1st effort with wide-screen and a considerable departure from his usual "dark" themes ( almost! ) Hawkins won a Golden Globe for her part in this
