...when I'm in a noirish mood. I actually feel it's a bit underrated in the noir pantheon. Dassin subsequently made a series of outstanding movies in Europe and those are the ones that tend to get more attention - this was his last before he was blacklisted. Widmark is excellent in this (his best role), the b&w cinematography is atmospheric and it has a good Franz Waxman score. I rented the Criterion edition last time out and it's a gorgous transfer.

I haven't seen The Big Caper in years and years, I might have to revisit this one.
