Nearly loved it. Most won't because of its Scandinavian director giving us a Norse-like hero and his home grown dose of violence.

Gosling stands tall, straight, silent to the point of near autism. He is a rock that doesn't telegraph thoughts or emotions. He is much more than meets the eye and this walking onion peels slowly as the film progresses.

Violent? Not for Refn nor his fans. Not much more than the average part-and-parcel crime drama. For those who have seen it he got technical advice from Gasper Noe on the elevator stomping scene which was CUT in order to get a "R" rating! Refn is famous for the "Pusher" series which used a few gallons of red stuff getting their points across.

Carey (so cute you could put her on a cracker with cream cheese) Mulligan was not so cute this time out. Perhaps purposefully to show a more realistic side to a woman whose hubby is soon to be released from prison. She seems too "adoring" of Gosling (her next door neighbor) despite the apparent "sterility" of their relationship.

Finally, the delight of the film for me: Albert Brooks. There is not telling what he did to get this part. I'm sure he squealed with delight when he got the go ahead.....Albert is a really BAD guy an you BELIEVE him. No overt Jewish shtick, just a thinking man's small time mobster who is capable of anything.

Gosling's stolid character seems to effect the pacing but the action is there and the plot is solid and classic.

I got my money's worth.
