X factor = American Idol + The Gong Show?

Does any body remember watching The Gong Show back in the 70's/80's?
Mix that with AI and it seems one has the recipe for X Factor. Not that AI didn't have some of its own gong show moments, but X almost appears to be more so. Just something about the whole feeling of the show. Maybe it's the audience early involvement (including booing). Some great singers on both shows (AI and X, not gong :)), some horrible.
That said I like the judges, esp the one who took The Pussycat Girls place last week. :)
