"Dark Victory:" Bette Davis in her eighth (!) outing with George Brent in a fine film

that, yes, does descend into absolute schmaltz--- but it works because of the spectacular acting of Ms. Davis and her character's best friend, Geraldine Fitzgerald. The film also features a surprisingly good performance from Bogart and, as a bit of a shock, Ronald Reagan as a bon vivant alcoholic (he does a very good Jimmy Stewart impression).
Davis was nominated for Best Actress, but lost to you-know-who in "Gone With the Wind." Originally, Garbo was selected for the role but she decided, instead, on "Anna Karenina."
Anyhow, the tender relationship between Brent and Davis, one of the finest I've seen, wasn't really acting at all. Brent and Davis were involved during the filming, both having recently ended relationships. Brent divorced his wife and Davis ended relationships (simultaneously) to William Wyler and Howard Hughes! What a gal....
Rent this, open a bottle of wine, and sit your wife down next to you.
You'll be very, very glad you did.
