"Hugo" was ridiculous from front to back, a kid's film gone whacky. "Age" is based on a wonderful Wharton

novel and it is interesting on many levels--- as good a view into a past generatiion's mores as you will see. It is as poignant a love story as "Jane Eyre" or "Wuthering Heights" and is captured by a director still at the height of his powers. Daniel Day-Lewis is terrific. Winona Ryder showed she once had great skills. Michelle Pfeiffer, also, is dazzlingly beautiful and shows her range, playing a role diametrically opposed to her star turn in, "Scarface," as a coke-headed moll.
I can't think of other costume dramas its equal, in the past decades, with the sole exceptions of "Barry Lyndon," and "Liasons Dangereuse."
"Age" is lustrous, brilliant filmmaking.
