Gloria Swanson. And a terrific performance also by Erich von Stroheim, as the faithful butler. Nancy Olson is perfect as the young innocent, as well. And the direction by Billy Wilder? Again, perfection.
You think this 50s film is dated? I just saw a special screening at the local art theater with two classes of college kids--- there was raucous applause as the credits rolled.
Brilliant writing, excellent cinematography.
It won 3 Oscars but should have won a dozen more.
