Anyone seen My Joy?

A Russian (OK, so it is officially Ukrainian) road movie, and so much more. To say it is depressing is to say nothing, unfortunately it also captures the modern (and not so modern) Russian/Ukrainian reality almost too well. Last time I traveled there was in 2007, and I drove through many villages and small town that are so well captured in the film - my fear is the typical Western viewer will not be able to grasp the whole depth of desperation, poverty and backwardness that exists in that part of the world. Some elements will most likely be totally lost - like the dripping with quiet horror the road check scene. The true horror is in how accustomed the people there are to this part of their lives.

Extremely well made film, somewhat in the vein of "4", except more horrifying.

Highly recommended.
