I did not find the characters to be stereotypical at all. I found them to be very raw and organic, much like the settings and the action. This movie was the absolute opposite of slick and stilted. So much so that it in effect calls out current trends and styles in blockbuster movies these days as the tired cliches that they are. As to the character's dysfunctionality...well yeah to the degree that it can be found in that time and that place. Anything else would be contrived IMO.
