'The Trial Begins': Young lion meets old lioness with business in mind . . .

This is a visually enticing film much like 'I Am Love' without Tilda dragging down the scenery. Filmed around Rome it is the story of a young "Finance Police" inspector who yearns for something more than the honor and duty his father did before him. Filippo reaches into the darkside of Italian business and meets Fanny Ardant in the process. Fanny has the connections while Filippo has the charm and ambition to build an empire for himself while enjoying his gorgeous mistress.

The story progresses at a "mature" pace with everyone knowing where it's going. Half the fun of getting there is the trip, si? Filippo (Michele Lastella) is solemn and intense while Fanny shows that the old lioness isn't ready to retire. The rest of the cast delivers which makes this worthwhile film and change of pace from Korean slashers and American gangsters.
