'The Desolation of Smaug': Jackson's vault was used as a backgound . .

And he is laughing maniacally while running his fingers through his lucre. This is another slice of CGI magic that is not so magic. Most all the scenes were produced in the shade or in darkness. There was little true daylight action which is surprising compared to the earlier films. Perhaps he cut back the budget and needed to hide some detail work?

If you've seen one you've seen them all and I now have ticket buyers remorse. There aren't a whole lot of different ways to dress up fantasy action and they were all used up in the first four films. Sure, kids "of all ages" will like it just because of what it is SUPPOSED to be. Those folks will go even if they announce poison gas in the air conditioning.

Have fun, buy lots of popcorn, and wait for the 'Interstellar' teaser trailer that says "This Time Next Year".
