The film you reference, I Knew Her Well was directed by Antonio Pietrangeli. The only film that predates it from the 1960's that was also directed by Pietrangeli is Phantom Lovers (Fantasmi a Roma) made in 1961. I'm working with the theory that if there's going to be a reference to another movie from within a movie, it's going to be one by the same director.

Like I said, just a guess.
