Why can't it be both?

From an creative standpoint (acting, scripting, direction) all film is serious because it's a business conducted within the framework of a collaborative process. From the production side of the equation you're always trying to reach a broader audience while working under the constraints of time and budget.
In that context, there is no difference between serious film & entertainment. It's all about expectations. Most dramatic and comedic films are produced to entertain, regardless of whether the creator's goals are cerebral (thought provoking) or tapping into something more instinctive.
IOW, grey pompon or Frenches, ...it's all mustard.
