Ridley is great but I suspect he kind of copied the type of humor he suspects NASA types employ, along the lines of the humor the techie types in the movie Contact, another movie about bringing someone back from somewhere in space and politics in the Science Community, used. Could be worse, though, Nolan apparently doesn't know about humor.
