Seems like a remake of season 1 but thats ok...

I thought season 2 was really bad, verging on self parody and worst of all a bore that I only finished out of some sort of ocd. I was done with the show,
But reviews of season 3 brought me cautiously back.
Southern setting. Check. Two tough cops. Check. Film noir dialogue. Check. Weirdly complex structure with time of crime and years later, interviews about that past time. Check. Crime involving kids. Check. Weird symbol possibly indicative of cult. Check.
I am reminded of Japanese director Ozu. He was accused of remaking the same movie over and over. He just said making movies was like making tofu. He followed his process. The subtext was it's ok if the tofu is tasty.
And this show is quite tasty so far, no complaints. It drips with quality, great actors, cinematography, music. The dialogue is dialed back from season 2 to sit right in the tough noir tradition. I am caught up in the case and look forward to next episode.
