New HD DVD firmware req'd for Good Shepherd combo disk

Posted by 4season on May 28, 2007 at 07:11:16:

Just a month after v1.5 appeared, 1.6 was released on the 24th of May, and you won't be able to play movies like The Good Shepherd without it. What's changed? Not sure, but the disk appears to have a revised interface offering a few more bells and whistles. Plan on 30-60 minutes of downtime if you are updating via a direct broadband internet connection, else turn the @#$% disk over and simply view the standard-def DVD version instead!

Unfortunately, the HD side of the disk is totally unplayable without the update, and because there's no enlightening error message to that effect, many buyers may assume the disk is defective and return it to the store.

These mandatory firmware updates may be the death of HD media yet, IMO.
