Sony SXRD Lamp Only vs Lamp Assembly?

Posted by Audio Snob on January 24, 2008 at 14:24:52:

Ok. I just purchased a Sony KDS-55A2020 and out of the box it has an excellent picture.

It will need a lamp according to Sony at 8,000 hours.

Question:

A lamp assembly (lamp + casing) retails at about $250. A lamp only (without casing) retails at about $160.

Has anyone gone the lamp only route? Is this a simple enough task to warrent the near $100 savings? Or should I take the no-brainer route and purchase the complete assembly? (Yes I can operate a screwdriver)

Thanks
