Old School Dolby surround receiver

Posted by Dawnrazor on March 15, 2008 at 19:35:27:

My dad has an old pioneer receiver that has a mono pre out for a center channel.

If I remember correctly, Dolby surround had a center channel that was limited in range, and unlike current receivers, you couldn't select large...every center was small.

Is that right? So if looking for an amp to drive a center speaker I don't need a very powerful one?? I am looking at getting him a T-amp for the center. WOuld it be better to just get a $150 modern day receiver?

This is a very midfi set up and quality is trumped by functionality.
