Help! Crazy digital standard help, H'DRM'I, very important question about this crazy standard.

Posted by Yashu on April 16, 2008 at 10:32:40:

Here is the deal: I want to use my 34" CRT HDTV as a second monitor for my computer. I can't get good picture quality beyond 800/600, and even then, it is not clear as it is not a digital signal.

I have heard that there are DVI to HDMI adapters. What I want to know is this:

Is there a way to convert a DVI signal to HDMI, or does it only work the other way around. HDMI is the *only* digital input on my TV, so I would truly be thankful if someone would let me know if there is a way to take the DVI connection from a source and convert it into HDMI for video. I hear there is some really bad DRM surrounding HDMI, but I am hoping that the electronic manufacturers are not so in bed with the media industry that I cannot do this. If you can go from HDMI to DVI, then you should be able to go the other way, so I want to know if such adapters exist and if anyone has had success going from DVI to HDMI on an HDTV...

I already know there is HDMI to DVI adapters, I want to go from the DVI on my video card to HDMI on my TV to get the full resolution and use it as a 2nd monitor. I do not want to have to buy a new video card with HDMI *just* to get something to work that should be working already.

I am an audiophile, not a videophile, so I am lost, and everyone I have asked in every store doesn't know, or only points me to the DVI to HDMI adapters, so basically, they are clueless as I am.

Thankyou for the help. I don't know why HDMI even took off... DVI was fine and can support resolutions well beyond the 1080 resolution of an HDTV. If it was just to have audio in the same cable, that could have also been done without having to build a new convoluted system. It is almost as if the media companies forced the manufacturers to use this silly connection instead. It is crazy what they charge for one at the store, you can buy 5 6ft DVI cables and a couple 6ft digital cables for the price of a single 3ft HDMI cable.
