simply the ability of the panel to accept an incoming 1080p signal. The panel itself always showed a progressive signalâ€”1080i panels displayed everything at 1080p. Their input circuits simply wouldn't accept a 1080p signal, probably a bandwidth restriction. What changed was the input stages.

As others have stated in this thread, plasma and LCD panels always display a progressive image.
