Hung on wall, thermal protection kicking in. What wall and what location? Is it over a fireplace or adjacent to a heat source? Is the problem the plasma or is the placement and the conditions it is exposed to?

You're probably right given the length of time it's been in use but it is possible that the problem is the placement.
