Digital. PCM is a digital signal.

In the pre/pro.

Yes there is, if your pre/pro can process the bitstream being sent. Typically a pre/pro has more processing capability than the player does, so manipulations specific to your environment (bass management, digital delay, digital EQ) can be set to desired parameters. These functions may be included in the player's feature-set, but they are often sharply limited in versatility relative to what a good pre/pro can do, again assuming that the pre/pro can process the bitstream the player is sending.
