Upscale or down????

I need to score a new DVD player for the family room system and am in a bit of a quandary. The Pio 1150HD is the display device in the family room and am currently using an Oppo 970 and upscaling to 720p. The Oppo 970 is moving to a bedroom system, thus the need for another DVD player for the family room. Question is ... am I better off going BD and down-scaling to 720 or going with the Oppo 983 and upscaling? Thanks for any advice.
