RE: Is there a flaw in my plan? setting up my system

>>Connect the HDMI from the DVD to the TV<<

OK

>>run the optical audio from the TV down to the recevier.<<

Why? This adds an extra (unnecessary) connection. Better to run from the digital out of the Oppo to the receiver instead.

>>I also have a second DVD player that I use that is older and has component outs. This would be hooked to the recevier and a set of component cables would run up to the TV as a second input.<<

Why put this into the system? Does this player do something the Oppo does not? Unless there's something truly unique about it, it seems superfluous.

>>The third video is a VCR which is all old style composite/RCAs. This would run to the Receiver and have a third connection to the TV via a composite video cable.<<

Check.

>>In the future if I get Blu-Ray I will get an Oppo HDMI switchbox.<<

In the future if you get Blu-ray you should dump your current receiver for a new one with HDMI switching and on-board HBR audio decoder. That would be a better choice than an outboard HDMI switcher.
