Screen size: 42" and up and you'll begin to see smoother edges and crisp movement on a 1080 set.
Viewing distance: If you sit closer than 8 feet away you will notice a better picture, even on a smaller screen.
Manufacturer: The better TVs will make even a 720 display look better than a lesser 1080. The video scaling devices are where the off-brands compromise most to keep costs down. Let your own eye be the judge here.
