Do you have the latest version of this player? The one with HDMI-out? This version will output a 720P signal, which will be displayed at the native resolution of your display (also 720p).

The original 540D("version 1") will also output a progressive scan signal, via component video connections (I have this one).

To be clear, progressive scan players will output in 480p (non interlaced), in addition to 480i (interlaced).So in 'P' mode, your player is sending a progressive scan output.
