Good information, Joe.

I started to post about this earlier today (with a link to that thread at the AVS forum) because I'm on the early adopter list, but decided to hold off because I wanted a bit more detailed information to share and there are still a few questions I have regarding load times and finalized universality.
Oppo emailed me yesterday with the early adopter information and asked for input.
I requested a bit more clarification about universality and load times before deciding to pony up the expected $499-$599 for the BDP-83 as I already own a Panny Blu-ray player as well as Oppo's top-of-the-line region free std. DVD upscaler (DV-983H) which also has first rate A/V versatility. Oppo hasn't responded yet.
As you can see by reading the buzz at the AVS forum there is still a lot of confusion about what this new player will do (function-wise), how it compares with existing BR players and when a finalized software-upgradable version will be released.
Don't get me wrong, this is a very promising new player and I'll probably bite the bullet as soon as Oppo gives me the thumbs up.
The bottom line is that if the BDP-83 does everything my 983 does and adds Blu-ray it will allow me to move the latter player and my Panny Blu-ray player to my second system eliminating more overlapping gear from an already overcrowded A/V rack. Note: If I buy one of these early units I'll report my observations here at the earliest opportunity.
