RE: HDTV/ATSC tuners, will cable work?

Posted by racerguy on February 1, 2009 at 07:26:44:

Your Comcast cable uses QAM for its "digital" channels, not ATSC, so a tuner that supports only ATSC won't give you what you're looking for. If the tuner supports QAM (many, but not all, do) you should get the same channels your TV's ATSC/QAM tuner is accessing.

Some DVD recorders have QAM tuners, some don't. Read descriptions carefully, perhaps view online owners manuals before purchasing, and check forums that talk about these devices. I have a Toshiba DVD recorder that has a QAM tuner. Bought a different-model Toshiba that was also supposed to have a QAM tuner according to the store's website, but it didn't - NTSC/ATSC only.

Having said that, keep in mind that DVD Recorders won't give you HD content. They are SD only.
