I wanted to copy the audio portion of an HDTV program that I had recorded on my Comcast DVR onto my Mac, but it quickly became evident that this process would not be as easy or straightforward as one might think. (If you wanted to keep the data entirely in the digital domain, that is.) After months of on-and-off research, I eventually stumbled upon a thread on AVS that gave me hope. I eventually tried the suggestion (using special software downloaded from the Apple Developed site) and was successful. Be aware, though, that it's not a straightforward process--you have to play the program and digitize the incoming stream to your Mac in real time. I was able to copy the entire program (video and audio) onto my Mac and then extract the audio portion only. It was saved as an .m2t file.
I used a Firewire connection, BTW, which has faster throughput than USB. Hopefully your DVR has a Firewire connection as well. (I know your Mac does.)
