Went to Costco to buy the New Vizio locally dimming LED LCD, BUT walked away with Plasma

Posted by Jon L on October 10, 2009 at 09:09:27:

I confirmed with Costco that the new locally dimming LED LCD Vizio (VF551XVT) has been in store for a few days. 240Hz, locally dimminng 55" LED LCD for $2000; what else can one ask for?

Well, I walked away with the 58" Samsung Plasma (PN58B540), which was set up side-by-side with the new and old Vizio, along with Panasonic plasmas. Same HD signal was feeding all of them, and by God, the Samsung plasma had so much more depth of colors, almost scintillating realism, and I just "felt" better looking at it. In particular, the moon-lit small ocean waves just looked alive, and I felt like I was actually there!

To motivate me, Samsung had $300 instant rebate (until Nov 15), which brought the price down to $1650, LOWER than the Vizio. 1080p 58" plasma for $1650? Wow, how things have changed.

It's not that other LCD's and Vizio's did not look great. They all were fine displays and would likely please their owners; it's just that side-side comparisons were very compelling. The Panny plasmas looked good, but I actually preferred the Samsung's qualities. Perhaps the 58" size was a factor as well.
