Google the exact model and/or chassis number and see if this is a common problem.
If that's not helpful, before giving it away to some optimistic hacker (use the local Freecycle mailing list, Craigslist, or whatever), take a look at the power supply caps. Bulging tops are a dead giveaway, but sometimes they just dry out with no external symptoms if exposed to prolonged heat.

OK, you already bought a plasma. Well, fixing the RPTV would give you a spare set for the rec-room or man-cave that would be OK for gaming or PC use.
