an Oppo BDP-83SE. I have the basic model ($500), it's a fine player as is. The basic guts are worthy enough that they are being incorporated in some much more pricey offerings. The SE has improved analog 2ch and mch outputs if you aren't going full HDMI. Or you can get the basic model and have it (professionally) modded later if you deem it worthwhile, it is becoming a popular base for that. Great for DVD, really good IMO, and also does SACD/DVD-A/CD and some other stuff.
As far as playing 1080p BD, any $200 player will give you very similar picture quality via HDMI. It's the other stuff that makes the Oppo popular, I think.
If you have full HDMI capability, the PS3 for $300 is very good for BD too. But doesn't even come close to the BDP-83 for DVD, nor does it do SACD (current models) or DVD-A. Sucks at CD IMO. No mch analog outputs. But does lots of other stuff the BDP-83 will never be able to do no matter how many firmware upgrades Oppo decides to put out. If you have the $500 to spare and don't want to play games, go BDP-83 instead of this. Actually, get both for your $800 LOL, the games are addictive.
