I wouldn't say a technological advance as much as just trying to get a deeper foothold in the masses. I suspect the recession has thrown a monkey wrench in the BDA's plans for world domination.
Get the Oppo BDP-83. Its built like a tank, and has amazing PQ. You will have to spend a whole lot more to better it. There is also an $80 mod you can do in 5 minutes, that will make it region free for both DVDs and BDs.
If you wish to used it heavily for music, you may wish to consider the SE version.
