It is all relative...
I recently bought the Oppo BDP-83 and have it hooked up via HDMI and analogue out to my A/V system. My Onkyo TX-SR806 receiver has as its internal DAC's the Cirrus Logic CS-4382 which is the same multi-channel DAC in the Oppo BDP-83. The BDP -83 for stereo out also has a separate DAC from Cirrus Logic the CS-4398 which is a true high end DAC. The 4382 is a very good multi-channel DAC but for stereo sound not as good as the 4398. Now again its all relative to what sonic experiences you are use to and have a taste for. How is your room setup and possibly room treated?
I am very impressed with the analogue stereo playback of my BDP-83. CD's sound superb on it in my room, to my ears and my sonic desires. It is as a CD player a machine the punches above its weight class. If you want a step up the SE edition (only if you hook it up via analogue out) is said to be improved sounding over the BDP-83.
If you are one of them snobby, uber audiophiles who thinks unless you spend near 5 figures or more on your digital end the Oppo will likely make you happy. Those who spend mega bucks on gear do get technically in general better products but more so only delude themselves based on the money spent to think they get such superior sound, good for them I guess.
I'm not saying the BDP-83 is the Holy Grail, NO! as I said it's all relative to your hearing, tastes in sound, experiences in musical sound add room design and treatments too, but for the money the BDP-83 is not only a kick but Blu-ray machine but a superb universal player too.
