I re-read the Consumer Reports article. The best of the plasmas were nearly as good as the best CRTs. Some LCD RPTVs were pretty good. None of the LCD flat panels came close. However, within types there was a lot of variation: any CRT TV that wasn't also a Sony was not very good.

LCDs may have improved since then, but I'd be really wary of buying any display without seeing an objective review of it. There's sets that for whatever reason don't handle horizontal pans properly, for example.
