HDMI switching receiver-will it pass through sound to the TV if the receiver is off?

I'm considering replacing my old Marantz with a new receiver (I run the LR main preouts of the Marantz to my preamp, and use it to power my center and surrounds-a tube amp powers my Vandersteen mains). For those occasions when I want to watch the news or whatever, it would be preferable to be able to do that without powering on the receiver.
