As you may have discovered, not everything from Netflix is in HD. Many of the things I've streamed have 4 dots for picture quality and most are accceptable, but if you get 4 dots followed by HD, the picture quality is improved. If you got a $10 credit from Amazon with your XDS like I did, streaming something from them in HD has very good picture quality. My conclusion is that the XDS is not the limiting factor.
