I feel your pain. It is rare that 42 inchers shatter this way, usually it's the larger ones with less glass support. I'm going to bet there was a virtually invisible crack (to you) in the glass when it was shipped to you. AVS has lots of posts with people noticing them over the years. Hit a bump or whatever in your car and poof.
