I have a PS3 hooked up in the living room. It's used for lots of things, one of them being Netflix streaming -- mostly by my kids. They have watched numerous movies and tons of Disney/Nickelodeon shows via Netflix/PS3 and I can't say I've ever seen a hickup with the streaming. In the last month, my wife has watched at least a season's worth of one show on her Dell mini-laptop over wireless (in the kitchen and in the bedroom) and hasn't had any problems.
As for the video, it's not quite DVD quality but pretty close. The audio quality is equal to (and may even be) Dolby Digital stereo.
Here's the setup:
12M cable broadband -> Linksys cable modem -> Linksys wireless b/g router -> Cisco range extender -> ethernet cable -> PS3
