I have no personal experience with the Oppo. An installer friend who sells them has had good luck with them and recommends them for most jobs. Oppo brought product to the market back when DVD was still the only format, the player literally took the market by storm and set benchmarks for performance. Their Blu-ray/universal players have been the same. Based on how well they perform and are accepted I'd say the digital outputs would have to be good. Oppos players have a rep for their analog outputs sounding good. I believe either Oppo themselves or some online retailers offer a 30 day return if you wanted to try one out.
What I'm currently using is an early generation Marantz BDP which is holding up very well. Marantz has universal players in the $499.00 range as well. I've only used the HDMI but in my opinion Marantz would make a good transport as well.
Which DAC are you using? Is it just for music, I'm not aware of any 5.1 DAC's except for what's built into receivers/processors.
