4k projectors are thin on the ground at this time. The best rated are the e-shift ones at the moment.

My advice would be that due to both the lack of product and software you would be much better served by getting a stop-gap unit like the Epson Home Cinema 5030UB which is relatively cheap and wait out the market. Your friend will end up with a much better end result in the end.
