Because the 1/8" jack is for earphone use it is thus a variable output, which I will assume you need for the new self-powered speakers. The RCA output might also be variable (you might have to choose between fixed and variable in the TV's menu). If the RCA output is fixed only (for use with a stereo receiver, for example), you do not have a choice.
The 1/8" output utilizes a small power amplifier to drive earphones. If the RCA output comes directly off the preamp section it might sound superior.
