Subwoofer Volume

I have a friend who is setting up his home theater with a newly purchased Anthem MRX 520. When he attempts to run Anthem Room Correction he gets the message that his subwoofer volume is too high. His sub is an older RTS model which does not have a level pot for the input that passes the signal directly through from the AVR bypassing the sub's internal crossover. If he chooses to use the room correction is his only option to use the input on the sub that employs the internal crossover as that does have a level pot to lover the sub's output and then set the crossover on the sub to occur as high as it will allow (which is 100 H.) in order to interfere the least with the Anthem's output to the sub?
